There may be a bit of a perception that I’m all against nature, and think that much of it would be improved by the application of copious amounts of concrete. To be honest, there is some truth in that; I think that we need more roads, and it’s not like buying houses is going out of fashion, so the demand has to be met somehow.
But it’s never that simple, is it? I still like the odd bit of nature. I like wildernesses, I like watching the clouds, I like walking along beaches.
Which is why I’m quite happy to see this. The National Trust have opened up Divis and Black Mountain for recreational purposes. Which is nice.
Not that I plan on using them, but, y’know, it’s nice to know that they’re there in case I ever wander up that way.
If we ended trade protectionism then most of the West’s farmers would go out of business as they’d be undercut by african farmers in particular. This wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, though, because there’d suddenly be more and cheaper land available for building roads and houses, and the leftovers can be turned into more and bigger nature reserves.
Ending poverty and tree hugging all in one go. I feel hippieish.
Shhhh next thing you will have bob geldof and Dog biscuit here – none of that please!!
Chez: not all agriculture would go the way of the dode. For example, mass transport of milk would be quite expensive, and the UK’s palate and dairy standards are significiantally different from most non-EU producers. It would be a very, very harsh transitional period, but it will have to happen at some time, and the later it is left, the harder it will hit.
And anything that could be mistaken for praise of Geldof or Bono (solo, limited praise for U2 will be allowed) will be deleted. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
I don’t believe I said that all of our farmers would go under… I was actually thinking of large scale farming enjoying economies of scale rather than highly perishable items like milk, but yes, you’re right and that doesn’t contradict anything in my first message.
Down with bono and Gelding. I mean Geldoff, who I hope is a gelding.
